I'm just hoping that someone has some suggestions that might help me?
I use Suse 6.4 at home alongside a win98 machine. My boss found out that I use Linux and has given me the task of trying to get our software product to run on Linux. The only problem is that it is all written in VB6! (I don't have anything to do with VB, I work on the old PICK system!)
I have got it running fine on VMWare, but this seems to be defeating the object a bit.
That depends on what the object is. Do you want the software to run on a free OS or do you want to be able to add "runs on Linux systems" to the sales brochure?
What I need to know is: 1) is there anyway I could port the software across and if so, what is involved?
No. Rewrite it.
2) Is there any software that might be able to transfer VB coding into something that Linux could accept??
I've looked and haven't seen anything really useful. I seem to remember a VB to Pascal translator which might help with a small part of a VB to Delphi port. If Linux is sufficiently important to you then you will need to rewrite the program. You need to decide just what the priorities are. There's always a chance that someone will write a VB to Delphi translator when Delphi for Linux arrives. You won't be the only person looking for that sort of tool. For now I suggest you ask on one of the Delphi support newsgroups, someone there might know more.
3) Has anyone got any suggestions of the best way to proceed?
Sorry about the long post, but I'm a bit stuck!!
