Because it requires JDK 1.1.8 or higher. You can use the IBM JDK that comes with SuSe 6.4. Search http://www.sun.com/supportforum/staroffice for a how-to, because you have to hack around alittle. If you don't want to do that (semi-hacking) you can get it from ftp://sunsite.auc.dk/disk1/ftp.tux.org/java/JDK-1.1.8/i386/v1/ among other places. Be advised that the java support still -with a mild understatement- is unstable and often the system complains about no java support and that you have to enter the settings from within star office. BTW has anyone on this list had any success with JDK 1.2* for this purpose?

I firs uninstall 5.1 and then I tried to install 5.2 and it says that java is not supported. Why is that?

I already install the Star Office 5.2 as root. For the other user when it gets into the installation screen it ask for: MODIFY, REPAIR OR REMOVE. Is it Modify or Repair?. Does this means that the installation is installed twice?, one for the root and the other for the other user?????
You should install it witn /net option (there is a readme in base tree). Saludos
