Once in a while I come across a package I'm interested in that is available both in .tgz and .rpm formats, but the .rpm format is configured for RedHat. In general, is it possible to use the RedHat RPMs under SuSE Linux with the right tweaking? Is there a way to do it that doesn't depend on the package contents? Or is it just not worth the trouble?
Paul: my experience is that with 6.4 (probably already with 6.3) quite a good number of RH rpm's will work on my SuSE system. I haven't really investigated why but as a matter of course I always try the rpm first and only if it bombs try to deal with the tar ball. I guess you could go into the spec files and hand-tweak those RH rpm's that don't work by hand. That, however, is still some time down the road for me as I currently don't have too much time on my hands to invest in reading "Maximum RPM".
