hi all,

i'm a new bebie in linux. i want install the tar and rpm files that i've 
downloaded from net.
i know few..and seems that it didn't really work. i need your help.
i'm dying here:)
these are the things i do to install a tar file:

tar xvfz file
./configure
make
make install

..these are the things i do... but i couldn't make the file work.
what additional things that i need to do..and is there an easier way to do 
that:)
..also i want to use the file i installed on my KDE enviroment what i have 
to do to make a short cut on my short cut for file as in win98??
