It sounds like you didn't run alsaconf. Alsaconf will setup the require lines in modules.conf for you. Now run:
rcalsasound restart
Thanks for the tip. There were about 15 modules already loaded but a couple related to seq and emu8000 weren't loaded. I'll run through alsaconf tonight.

By default, after an alsa install the channels are muted, you will have to unmute them with an alsa compatable mixer such as alsamixer which should be on your system.
I'd read about that already so that wasn't a problem. Every other sound app I've tried has been working, it's just Brahms that I'm having trouble with.
