This is like reading the obituaries and wondering why everybody is dying all the time ;-) Simply put: people don't email to ask for help if there are no problems.
Sad truth. But that's what we're here for, right?!?! ;)
System is AMD Athlon 500, 128m Ram, 17G HD, 3D S320 II Ultra 32meg vid,PCI modem - K56, Trust 19200 USB scanner, HP 610C printer, DVD, Cd-RW. All of which run perfectly under 95 & 98
Your 'modem' is a winmodem. It is only made to run on windows. Maybe there is a driver at www.linmodems.org, but this is really the fault of the penny pinching companies hoping to save a buck and sell you an inferior modem. Thier drivers are binary and they do not tell Linux developers the specification.
Hold on, there, cowboy. Not all PCI modems are WinModems. Once you have Linux running, do an `/sbin/lspci' and post the results here so that we can determine if and what course of action is appropriate.
You should check the hardware database to see what your hardware is supported by Linux:
Always a good idea :).
ANY help appreciated, BUT if this is the "normal" state of affairs with the Linux system then I think that "Uncle Bill" can sleep soundly at night, it's a "no contest" to Microshaft with all it's faults.
I installed 6.2 with zero serious problems in half an hour, so I can only speak from my own perspective. Installing windows was much more of a pain to me! Of course, all of my hardware was supported.
I got to a point once where I could install 5.3 or 6.0 with my eyes closed. It's not difficult, once you understand what's going on.
