I encountered a similar problem when I first install Linux on a win95 box. It was due to a change in the letter of the CDROM drive because of the fat partition suppressed. In fact, the letter switching didn't occur "everywhere" and the Explorer was trying to read an inexistant drive (to print the volume label in the left pane). I had to manually help Windoze : System properties / Device manager / CD-ROM / properties (button) / parameters / current drive letter assignment : type in the good one Then, probably reboot. I translated from french, the names may differ.
