You're not. Indeed, it is possible to achieve this task using converters:
catdoc for MS-Word format and the other, xls2csv for MS-Excel format.
Have a look at http://www.ice.ru/~vitus/catdoc/ to get informations on
catdoc (and on other MS-Word converters) and at
http://www.ice.ru/~vitus/catdoc/xls2csv.html to get infos on xls2csv.
I haven't worked with these apps too long, just wasted some time to see if
it worked. Well, it works. You can get plain text files from your MS
files and then do whatever you want to compare them.
