I'm running Helix preview 2 (Gnome 1.2) on my 6.4 box. I've not had any problems using it so far. I had difficulties updating the older version. I kept getting complains from the updater about libjepg.so.6 not being installed and not installing some packages as a result. I copied the library binary from a partition with 6.3 and still got those messages from the updater. I even renamed it to: /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.6.0.0* /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.6 -> libjpeg.so.6.0.0* (I don't think it makes any difference having it this way, though.) I finally got all the Helix preview 2 rpms and installed the whole thing, this time I did not get libjpeg.so.6-related errors. Another thing to consider when installing these packages is if you choose GDM as your login manager, you have to edit your /etc/permissions.local and add: /var/lib/gdm gdm.gdm 750 run SuSEconfig and watch it change group ownership. Without this, when the system switches to run level 3, GDM will not start and complaint about incorrect group ownership.
