/var/log/boot.msg or simply try "dmesg"
Alas, that's only a partial answer. One can also get error messages after logging to boot.msg has ended. That happens, for example, while exeucting the initialization files in /sbin/init.d, and those errors don't show up in boot.msg. You can look at them using RtShift-PgUp at the first login prompt, but as far as I know the full set of messages after logging to boot.msg has ended isn't saved anywhere.
