Hi Alvaro, I compiled the ALSA sound driver and then ran alsaconf to configure the sound driver. These are the outputs from various commands after configuring the driver. Please check whether these outputs bear a resemblance to your configuration. In fact, the kernel outputs some warnings like "card out of range" but it should not really matter. Regarding the ASUS card, i am not really sure about its compatibility. When u run alsaconf (0.4.2b version), the menu shows a list of all the cards (chipsets including integrated onboard sound) that it supports. Please go thro' it and check whether ur ASUS card is also one among the list. I have the same Intel P III chipset with AD 1881 AC 97 Codec Audio controller. I tried OSS limited evaluation version which was successful, but it stopped working after around 20 minutes( evaluation period). So, i downloaded the ALSA 0.5.7 driver and utilities versions (.bz2 tar files) from ALSA site (not to mention alsaconf 0.4.2b also) and compiled the same on my SuSE 6.3 (2.2.13 kernel) version. It is working beautifully! I am able to hear mp3 songs on my system now, but i haven't explored all other options with ALSA 0.5.7.

Thanks Raghav, but I am still a bit clueless. Here's what I did: 1) Downloaded alsa drivers, libraries and utils 2) Compiled all of them (smoothly, no error messages) 3) Changed my /etc/conf.modules But things still don't work out, although the number of error messages decreased. I was wondering if you could give me more detailed instructions, including maybe a copy of the relevant section in /etc/conf.modules Alvaro ps.
