Dear All, As part of "re-organizing" my HD, I would like to "move" the /boot partition, and I am wondering if this is safe. (Answering to a somewhat related question, both Mike Cleary and Rocky McGaugh have recommended that I use Partition Magic, but I don't have it, and I am not sure I want to spend the money...). This is what my HD looks like: Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1 580 4658818+ c Win95 FAT32 (LBA) /dev/hda2 581 582 16065 83 Linux ### This is boot /dev/hda3 583 627 361462+ 83 Linux ### This is home /dev/hda4 628 1662 8313637+ 5 Extended /dev/hda5 628 644 136521 82 Linux swap ### Swap /dev/hda6 645 1662 8177053+ 83 Linux ### / I would like to make /home larger with space I take away from the windows partition. But /boot is in between windows and /home. So this is what I plan to do: 1. Using fips, get 1 GB from the windows partition. 2. Start Linux. Copy the contents of the /boot partition somewhere else in / (e.g., /tmp/tempboot); ditto for /home (to /tmp/temphome). 3. Start Yast. Delete the /boot and /home partitions. 4. Create a new (small partition) at the begining of the 1GB I took from win; that will be the new /boot. 5. The rest of that 1GB plus what used to be /boot and /home become a new /home. 6. After partitioning and formating, copy the contents of /tmp/tempboot into the new /boot and the contents of /tmp/temphome into /home. 7. Done. Is this likely to work? I think so, but I am concerned because during a brief time I will be left without a /boot partition. Would it be safer to start Linux from a floppy and do everything manually (no yast)? [this, though, sounds like more of a pain...]?
