Most of my problems with installing new RPMs lately have been about them
needing one version of gtk+ or the other. I am kind of confused about
how various programs use these libraries. For example, I tried to
install the latest version of xmms-1.01, but rpm tells me that I need
gtk+ 1.2.2. I couldn't find that version but did find a version 1.2.6.
I tried to install that but was informed by rpm that irssi (which I use)
needed an earlier version of gtk. It seems that I am being led into an
unending spiral of upgrades, just to get one program to work. I don't
understand why software cannot use a later version of a library. Is
there some basic issue that I am missing? Thanks, Rob.
