Hello everybody,
I want to change the mail server from MS Exchange to Sendmail to use Linux. But I don't know where to start. I've found a text file that is starting with something like "Sendmail is probably the most complex mailer" which scared me.
Can't I make a sendmail configuration quickly?
Using a default configuration like the ones that comes with suse is very easy.
Yeah. If you've configured a mailer before I think it must be easy.
Not too much, when you install SuSE the own distribution ask you what kind of mail server do you want and then a "custom" sendmail.cf is installed; i've to say that in my own configuration i needed to edit a bit that sendmail.cf file, but it's not dificult if you've a concrete question to ask it on this list or another and obtain a right answer.
But I've never configured one before. There is a small network consisting of 15-20 users. I want to setup a linux box to connect them to internet and I want to use that box as a mail server too. I took a look at sendmail config files. As expected I didn't undertstand anything. I'm now reading mail-howto. That document claims that qmail is more secure and easy to install. Am I on the right track?
Yes, you're. I've no doubt about that, qmail has not been exploited never as far as i known and sendmail have a long history of sad security stories... There's a book from editorial SAMS called "Maximum Linux Security" that explains very well, between others, how to install and configure a qmail server. Perhaps you should consider read it.
