No It is not free (about $300NZD a month). They would not give me any
information on the modem. All I got told was that the data gets sent down
the phone line and returnning data comes back via satellite. The hardware
alone is going to cost me $1100.00 + sales tax(%12.5)NZD. All the other isp
wanted to charge me over $1000.00 a month + hardware on top.

If your ISP is "free" they probably want to run an ActiveX application with ads while you're connected. But it's not a driver...
If you signed up for a DSL connection, then DSL modem is just an external device that connects to your Ethernet card. They may refuse to _support_ you, but there's no reason for the DSL modem not to work. And again there's no driver in the picture.
The bottom line, what exactly is your/ISP's problem?
