Just leave the extended partition as a Windows 95 extended - it shouldn't cause any problems. In fact, I don't think there is such a thing as a Linux extended partition.
fyi, there us a linux extended partition, its type 85.

Unfortunately 'man fdisk' doesn't shed any light on the matter, nor do the kernel docs. Could anyone explain what's so special about Linux Extended? (I have a sneaking in suspicion that it's something to do with being able to nest extended partitions...)
