I am trying to get my SuSE Linux 6.3 system set up as an NIS client. The NIS server is a FreeBSD system, using DES encrypted passwords. I have ypbind running on the SuSE system, it is binding to the NIS domain and I can ypcat the maps. However, logins fail with authentication failures. I am assuming that this has something to do with shadow passwords but I am not sure what to do. FreeBSD uses shadow passwords and those are stored in master.passwd.byname and master.passwd.byuid maps. There are also passwd.byname and passwd.byuid maps for non-shadowed passwords. I copied the /etc/nsswitch.nis file over to /etc/nsswitch.conf to make sure that nis was being used. I am sure there must be a simple answer to this.
