Dear SuSE Users List: I recently upgraded from SuSE 6.2 (full version) to 6.4 using the 6.4 Evaluation Version. I had some problems, most of which I solved. But I have a nagging problem. I cannot compile programs using ./configure, make, etc. ./configure could not guess my host type, and then, after I supplied one, it stopped when gcc failed ./configure's test. Below I include the relevant outputs of ./configure, when I was trying to compile and install lyx-1.1.4fix3. First, when I invoked simply './configure', here is what I got: loading cache ./config.cache configuring LyX version 1.1.4fix3 checking host system type... configure: error: can not guess host type; you must specify one Second, I invoked './configure --host=i386-pc-linux-gnu', and here is what I got: loading cache ./config.cache configuring LyX version 1.1.4fix3 checking host system type... i386-pc-linux-gnu checking target system type... i386-pc-linux-gnu checking build system type... i386-pc-linux-gnu checking config.cache system type... same checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/ginstall -c checking whether build environment is sane... yes checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes checking for working aclocal... found checking for working autoconf... found checking for working automake... found checking for working autoheader... found checking for working makeinfo... found checking for prefix by checking for lyx... /usr/X11R6/bin/lyx checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... (cached) yes checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/ginstall -c checking for kpsewhich... kpsewhich checking for gcc... gcc checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables. I never had this problem in 6.2, and I did not uninstall any packages. I can't imagine what dependencies I am missing, if any (Note that in the package info for gcc, SuSE tells you to make sure to have binutils and other packages installed, including "include", but there is no such package. What do they mean?). Perhaps this is a problem of unlinked libraries? I did have a problem with this. SuSEConfig (running from YAST) reported that libraries such as libBrokenLocale.so were not found. I discovered that they had all be delinked. After manually linking them to their new locations, ldconfig (from SuSEConfig, under YAST) reported, or caused, them all to be not found (i.e. dangling) again. Have I found a bug? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
