I finally figured out that the musicfnt.tex file problem was because Rosegarden is actually exporting the older, MusicTex format which apparently did need a musicfnt.tex file. When I removed the insert line from the Rosegarden output file it worked fine. I'm actually trying to sort this out for my son who is a music major. I'll pass your suggestion on to him.

As for notation software, don't forget lilypond which comes with the SuSE distribution. It uses a text description file to produce nice results, is GPL'd, and can produce simple MIDI files. Another option is CMN at: http://ccrma-www.stanford.edu/CCRMA/Software/cmn/cmn-manual/cmn.html It also uses text files (using LISP style). It doesn't do MIDI, but seems to have the most extensive capabilities (can produce very modern notation) and is quite flexible.
