I have no problem with commercial software or paying for shareware. Companies like SuSE, RedHat, Mandrakesoft, Corel provide an added value to the Linux package. So, I generally purchase a copy every few releases. There are also some commercial products that I have no problem paying for. Partition Magic is one of those. I did buy Norton Utilities and Norton Anti-virus for the Windows systems used by wife and daughter, but the price was very reasonable.
I still need to supoer M$ for our payroll stuff. I found it two expensive to move it to linux ( around 400.00 ) so will dual boot it on those two machines. MOved the checking to monydance wich is much faster on linux. Just got my copy of 6.4 from Compusa , more to suport it rather than the need for upgrade. Am looking at the ESP print driver (no driver for an epson 1160) and was very impressed with it. Very easy to use.Price is good , although they have a very restrictive licence , but its worth the price for what I need it for.
I personally think that the price for Microsoft Office is exorbitant. I personally use Linux for 100% of my computing at home. Unfortunately I am obliged to use NT at work for email although I have a Tru64 system on my desk (it's on a private net though), and several different Linux systems running in our lab (http://testdrive.compaq.com/).
I was looking into a copy for my wife as its whats used at her colledge (word 97 office suit) and was shocked at the pricing. Am trying out applixware and it runs realy nice especialy on lower end hardware , and amn waiting for corel to work the kinks out of WP Office 2000 , So I May just pony up for applixware. Like It so far.

With commercial software , the only way is to vote with your dollars. If you have enough peaple willing to hold them back , changes can be made to happen. With all the new software coming out , its easier. Just wait for some of the more popular devolopment tools to move over to linux , then the playing field will get interesting. ie borland products under corel (delhi ect...)
