I would think that it is more important how often you read/write a partition than its size. So you should definately put /var on the other disk. However, I don't know if it might be a better idea to make 2 swap partitions - one on each disk. Wait for comments on this from people more experienced with multi-disk systems than I am.
This is a 32Mb machine which I know is not adequate for the final configuration, but I expect that it will handle a demonstration run, and then an expanded memory would only affect the frequency of swaps. Right?
If the BIOS detects the memory correctly, and reports correctly to Linux, it should be working without any changes in config after you add some RAM. Otherwise you might need to add a kernel parameter to /etc/lilo.conf.
