Hi,
I'm at the end of the line here. I really don't know what's causing this. I'm trying to forward my email to another box with no MX record by just forwarding it to the host like this:
/etc/aliases:
icarus: icarus@c18752226.telekabel.chello.nl
So my mail is entering a box with a valid MX record, and that box is just forwarding all my mail over to the c18752226 etc-box. It has worked for months.
But suddenly, my box decided it wouldn't do lookups anymore. My syslog now constantly says:
Apr 12 23:44:22 www sendmail[3318]: XAA03314: to=icarus@c18752226.telekabel.chello.nl, ctladdr=root (0/0), delay=00:00:05, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=esmtp, relay=c18752226.telekabel.chello.nl., stat=Deferred: Name server: c18752226.telekabel.chello.nl.: host name lookup failure
Host Name Lookup Failure.... ping works. nslookup works. "Connection from c18752-etc" works.. Why won't sendmail do the lookup? I have made no changes in the last months except: adding a mailinglist to my majordomo configuration. That couldn't be it, could it?
Are you running a nameserver? Some application enforce reverse name mappings, telnet does, NFS and many others. So when you contact the nameserver it gives you an address, this address must correspond to a name. If you are just using /etc/hosts then it is already done for you, but when configuring a nameserver you must explicitely setup the reverse mappings. I am using only a caching namserver with /etc/hosts for all my local hosts, so I will not have this problem. I have setup a full fledged namserver before, but had a lot of trouble. Hope this helps.
I've noticed the dot (.) after the second mention of the hostname, right before it says stat=deferred. Is that dot normally put there? Maybe that's the cause. If so: I don't know how to fix it.. ;-(
I'd appreciate some hands here, I'm really out of ideas!
Thanks,
Rogier
