Is there a way to semi-painlessly rebuild it by scanning binary directories er sump'n?

Is that to say that it is so far gone that `rpm --rebuilddb' won't produce >any results?
Have a look in /var/adm/backup/rpmdb/ there should be a gzipped copy of the database.

This happened to me after I tried to "Update" my Suse6.3 distro with the Suse6.3 Update files. I think updating the base system while it was running may have done it, or perhaps there is a bug in Yast-1.03-5 Anyway, I couldn't find the backups, either, so I had to reinstall the whole system. Needless to say, I have not tried again to update Yast or the base system, and everything is OK.
