It is widely acknowledged that a standard would be very desirable. SuSE is an active member of the Linux Standard Base Project. When there is established a 'common industry standard', SuSE will very likely comply with it. Right now, there does not exist a 'common industry standard'. You surely don't mean to imply that the way Red Hat does things is 'the standard'? Have you checked how Slackware and Debian do things lately?
