Here may be a problem, you are using the -l option which allows you to
use an alternate login program rather than the default /bin/login. I
think you want -L for local (no carrier detect). That would explain why
you don't get a login prompt, but then you wouldn't get one with a stock
kernel either.
Mine looks like
S0:23:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L 9600 ttyS0
I'll recompile my kernel this weekend and see what I get.
