The manual indicates indicates two things on this particular topic:
1. It needs bidirectional communication.
2. The printer requires an IEEE-1284 compliant cable.

Other than that, it doesn't mention EPP/ECP, so I followed your recommendation and set it to EPP.

There were no changes in functionality from my last problem report. I still can't print, and files remain in the print queue. *sigh*

Jon Pennington let me know he fought for months trying to get his LJ5L to work and never succeeded. Has anyone got this thing working properly with linux?

The hardware support database seems to indicate it's possible.
