This has all the hallmarks of an overheating CPU. Those Athlons really cook. The chip is happy while you're not stressing it, but when you start to do something complicated all those extra transistors start getting used and it overheats. Try running a gzip on a large file. I bet it dies every time! You might be able to prove the point by opening the case and pointing a desk fan into it at full blast. What you really need is a better CPU fan.
As suggested, I downloaded the memtest86 program and ran it overnight - 9 hours straight with no errors. I think my memory is OK.
My system has locked up twice more now, both times during the ld stage of compiling using make, and this time from the bash shell. It doesn't lock up every time, however. I successfully recompiled and linked the same code three or four times before the system locked up.
This is very disturbing, since I put this machine together as a development machine! I can't afford to reboot running fsck every 20 minutes or so while I am working!
