Memory usage is not an issue, as long as you are not swapping. If timing is critical, look into RTLinux, a set of Real Time extensions to Linux. http://rtlinux.org/rtlinux/index.html Rather than deleting things, use runlevels. I've got a Linux based MP3 player in my car. Runlevel 2 is for running in the car, minimal services, serial console. Runlevel 3 is for running on my desk, NFS, HTTP, etc, for management of the box. Serial ports can be used for timing with great accuracy, if you are willing to learn a bit about microcontrollers. I've got many devices based on PIC microcontrollers hanging off serial ports. Not for the faint of heart though. You can get a board with an Intel 8255 PIO chip, 24 lines of I/O, ISA card, for < $50. Unbelievably easy to program. It just gets memory mapped, so ioperm() and write/read.
