Have you tried again to cat /etc/princap > /dev.lp0 as set out below.
The only reason I asked to do an ls -l on /dev/lp0 was to ascertain if there were any strange links set up because as previously mentioned the cat command as shown directly outputs the file to the printer port bypassing all other software. So it is basically imposible to do what you said happened.
Please retry the commands as shown below and let us know what happens cat /etc/printcap > /dev/lp0
This gets nothing.
cat /etc/printcap > /dev/lp1.
This gets:
bash: /dev/lp1: Device not configured
Good we know it is connected to /dev/lp0 now and that the port is not functioning properly for some reason. What printer are you using? Have you checked to see if you can print from MS-Dos or Windows on this machine to the printer. I suppect that you have a hardware problem. Have you checked the cable?
What is this "cat" by the way?
man cat NAME cat - concatenate files and print on the standard output SYNOPSIS cat [OPTION] [FILE]... DESCRIPTION Concatenate FILE(s), or standard input, to standard output. Or put simply it prints a file to the screen unless redirected. Similiar to the 'type' command under DOS.
