Err, I said copy but it needs to be a raw write.
dd if=/boot/vmlinuz of=/dev/fd0
In /etc/lilo.conf change boot=/dev/hda (or whatever) into boot=/dev/fd0. Leave the rest of lilo.conf intact and run /sbin/lilo. If you still have your linux installation and a working kernel, this is all it takes.
