doing what you suggest adds the file to the list

Only have one parallel port which uses lpt1

Hi,
Have you tried sending a file directly to /dev/lp0 to prove the port is working?
cat <file> >/dev/lp0
The <file> should be file suitable for printing on your printer. e.g. a plain text file.
You will have to be root to use this command because of the default permissions set for this device excude users from directly accessing it.
