try doing

cat /etc/passwd | mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/smbpasswd

that should run any passwords in /etc/passwd through mksmbpasswd.sh and
create /etc/smbpasswd.

there is the option to change the windozw registry, but that one never
worked for me, the one above did. Hope this helps...
