[SLE] SuSE 6.1 and Matlab

Does anyone here have experience using Matlab 5.3 with SuSE 6.1? Specifically, can you use your MEX-files? What, if anything, did you have to do to your libraries to get them (the MEX-files) to work? I am looking at the grim prospect of switching to Red Hat 5.2 (maybe 6.1 if I can determine that that can work) and adding some libc5 math libraries to _that_ to get Matlab to work properly on my Linux box (which does everything else perfectly).
The "experts" at Matlab have told me twice that Matlab "officially" supports only Red Hat 4.2 (yes, 4.2) and punted on my original question. (Although they assure me that they have SuSE customers who have "successfully used" Matlab.) So I asked whether Matlab has plans to support a newer distribution. I get a second rep who first tells me that Matlab can run on "any Linux distribution." I now think I have someone who might be able to help, so I elaborate futher. He then says that he did not mean "MEX functionality" and also punted. Matlab technical support at least on this question has been a sad, unfunny joke. In both cases, I clearly stated that (1) I could run Matlab perfectly, except for some SIMPLE MEX files that (2) have been compiled and run perfectly, countless times on Unix and NT machines. In both cases, I was given a standard solution that the second tech rep admitted was really just to get Matlab running at all. Not my problem. :-/
I am obviously a bit fed up with them.
I am also desperate for a solution, so I am trying this forum again.
Thanks in advance for any help!
