Not entirely sure about the localhost problem... (take a look at /etc/hosts maybe?) On my system, in /etc/modules.conf char-major-4 is the serial driver... I had exactly the same problem on bootup until I compiled the serial port module... Dont need to rebuild the entire kernal... Just run "make menuconfig" from the linux source dir, select serial to be compiled as a module, exit the config and run "make modules" then "make modules_install"

Hi ,
I was hoping you kind folks could help me with a networking problem. I have a 3 computer net with win98/linux dual boot. The win stuff is a no-brainer.
But Linux... I upgraded my kernel from 2.0.36 to 2.2.12 and rebuilt 2.2.12 several times until I got my pci nic card to work (rior to the upgrade the nic driver would not compile) In the process, I did something??? and lost my localhost.
I also have a message while booting:
modprobe can't locate module char-major-4
My modem gets initialized (i'm sending this message) conf.modules shows char-mahjor-4 to be a serial device. I suspect this is unrelated to the localhost problem and that I will probably need to rebuild the kernel again but I am not certain.
The dummy device and eth0 get set up just fine and the nic works (I can ping the other computers).
My /etc/hosts file has 127.0.0.1 localhost 192.168.244.001 Darius.Jets.gr Darius
ifconfig shows

My other Linux has a 2.2.5 kernel and doesn't suffer from this problem. the only difference I can see other than the kernel is that the 2.2.5 doesn't have a dummy device.
If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions I would really appreciate hearing them.
