Try `lsof /cdrom' as root. This should show you which processes have open files or their working directory on the CD.
Excelent !!! Just what I needed. The answer however was that "rpciod" had /cdrom/xxx/xxx as its CWD. What is rpciod ? I couldn't kill it so ended up having to reboot :-( Peter.
