I am a complete newbie with networking. Never have worked with it before. I have a linux box with SuSE 6.3 installed and a Windos box with 95 installed.
When I ping from the Windos box to the Linux box, both using the IP address 192.168.0.xxx or the name 'root' (short name in /etc/hosts), it works. Does not work if I use 'root.home' (full name in /etc/hosts), gives unknown host, light on hub for the windos box does blink, but not on the Linux box.
When I ping from the Linux box to the windos box pinging with the IP address 192.168.0.xxx it works, but when pinging using the name 'windos.paul' or 'windos', it says network unreachable. The light on the hub for either box does not blink.
I have read the how-to's that I can find, but still in the dark about what is causing this. Any help would be appreciated.
If using IP numbers works, and names do not, this indicates a name resolver problem. I suggest defining a domain name for your network, then naming each box accordingly: domain: home Windows box: windos.home Linux box: root.home If you don't have a domain name that is resolvable on the Internet, this can lead to all kinds of mail problems. I have one that is resolvable, but my mail server's name is not, and SuSE's spam filters block out my e-mail from this list. -- George Toft http://www.georgetoft.com Certified NACSE Senior Network Specialist/Instructor - Network Administrator Master of Science Information Systems - Linux System Administrator - Web Master --> Looking for the right LINUX job in Los Angeles <-- __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
