Getting the wheel on an intellimouse to work in linux can be a big pain. I've managed to get mine working on a SuSE 6.3 system. I'm using a PS/2 intellimouse. Here are the details: Go to: http://jcatki.dhs.org/imwheel Download the file imwheel-0.9.7.tar.gz. Get the Full Version 420KB. Untar the file in some working directory. Change directories to imwheel. Now compile the program with the command: make. If all goes well, it should compile the program. If it fails, you probably need to install additional compiler/libraries. Now go to root with the su command. Run the command: make install. During the install you will be asked if you want to setuid root. I answered yes. Then, (still as root) edit the file /etc/XF86Config. Go to the "Pointer Section" and modify the file manually so that this section looks like this: Section "Pointer" Protocol "IMPS/2" Device "/dev/psaux" Resolution 100 BaudRate 1200 ZAxisMapping 4 5 Buttons 3 EndSection Exit root, and go back to regular user. In your home subdirectory, edit the file .xinitrc. Just before the line 'exec $WINDOWMANAGER' put the line imwheel -k That's it. Now when you start xwindows, the wheel will work. On my pc, the wheel scrolls a full screen with each roll. If you hold down the shift key when you roll it, it move one line at a time, much like in windows98. Good luck, Alan Riggins Chris Reeves wrote:

Hmm.. that's a wheel mouse, correct?
There was a thread about wheel mice on this list recently, although I don't save much of my mail. :/
Getting the wheel to function in Linux is a project in and of itself, and a pretty big one at that. There's a web page out there somewhere which someone posted and I went to, didn't bookmark, and deleted the original email w/ the URL. Figures eh?
I know the feeling. I would disagree that it is a big project though. For me all it took was a download, compile, and an easy edit of /etc/XF86Config pretty much verbatim from the README and everything was working fine.
If anyone else on the list has the URL for the wheel mouse page, please post it.
There are two useful pages: the first is a general page about wheel mice in general, while the second is about the IMWheel program in particular, which is what I use.
