OK. I untarred the file and according to the read me, I should type the command make FREETYPE_BASE=<your path to FreeType-1.1>
Where is FreeType-1.1 ? There is no file resembling that name. there are some libbttf.* files in /usr/lib is that the path?
Trust me, you don't need the FREETYPE_BASE setting. Freetype is a library for dealing with true type fonts. It's on your SuSE CDs. If you installed the package freetype, the compiler and linker will know how to deal with it.
Interesting, I tried the command make FREETYPE_BASE= without any paths that created a file ttmkfdir What exactly does the word "FREETYPE_BASE" do in this command. And what does the path after the equal sign do? I looked at the man page.
It sets a variable that is used by make to find the path where free type is installed. On SuSE Linux free type is located in a directory that is automatically searched by the compiler and the linker so you don't need it.
