Russell, I just recompiled 2.2.14 as you suggeted with every cdrom module compiled in (not as modules). I got the same result (i.e. Sound works as in I can play midi and wav files, but I cannot get audio from the cd-rom). On boot the kernel did a lot of autoprobing (expected).
