I know MCSE's that would put some of you to same. the have been SA's for 15 years.. then Boeing required them to become MCSE's. I am also have met some that could not fight thier way out of a wet paper bag. I have also met SA's, that should never be allowed to touch a computer, let alone a UNIX box.
The problem is the current ratio is now probably 10 to 1 paper MCSEs to experienced admins.
Where I work it's the opposite, MCSE won't get you anything here. We've been stung by too many morons that passed MicroSofty's rigour testing and still couldn't cope with simple jobs. I mean come on, I told one of them to run a command line prog and he came back saying it wouldn't work for him. I went to his desk to find him diligently double-clicking on the program. If the Linux Cert is stringent then it would be worth it to my mind, but if it's a joke like MCSE is, then to heck with it.
I have listened iwth some humor. I know that M$ fails about 47% to 52% of the applicants on the first time through. That they are in reality fairly decent tests. Why don't some of you take the transcenders and see what you would score. I would take some that has a strong background in Linux though before a MCSE. I do have to be honest, though, I have met some that could blow off the socks of some very talented SA's.
I passed all 6 of the MCSE tests with scores between 75% and 95%. I had very little experience, and there weren't very many resources when I took the tests. I believe they have firmed up the tests but I've taken some samples of the 4.0 tests and they weren't much of a problem. However, I do now have the experience which helps with the tests. The toughest of all the tests I've taken so far was the Novell CNA 5 test, that includes the MCSE tests and the CCNA test.
