Hi. I have SuSE 6.1. I want to install Netscape Communicator 4.7 (128bit). I retrieved communicator-v47-us.x86-unknown-linux2.2.tar.gz from Netscape. I didn't know whether to pick the 2.0 or the 2.2, so I went with 2.2. I know about /usr/X11/bin/Netscape -> communicator /usr/X11R6/bin/Netscape -> communicator /usr/bin/X11/Netscape -> communicator SuSE uses for starting it up... After install, I tried netscape and got these errors in XMessages: /opt/netscape/netscape: error in loading shared libraries libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Ok, so the Linux section of the Installation Troubleshooting section of the README inside of netscape-v47.nif, says:
Incompatibilities with Netscape are known to exist in some versions of libc. If you think you are experiencing a libc-related problem, try downloading a different version of libc from:
http://www.caldera.com/tech-ref/col-1.0/updates.html or http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/GCC/
If possible, please see the Release Notes for more details.
(which is http://home.netscape.com/eng/mozilla/4.7/relnotes/unix-4.7.html) I looked at the Caldera site. The page wasn't there. I poked around a bit and ended up here: http://support.calderasystems.com/caldera?solution&11-991019-0002&130-940345091&14-0&2715-0&15-0&2716-0&57-search&58-&25-6&3-libstdc which gives:
Description:
>I get library dependency errors when I try to install Netscape >Navigator 4.7. What steps do I need to take to install Netscape >correctly?
Solution:
>First make sure that you download the correct version - >communicator-4.7-linux2.2. Second, change to /usr/lib and create >a symbolic link - ln -s libstdc++.so.2.9 libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2. >The last step would be to untar the file with tar xvf filename. Ok, I have /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.2.9 here. Is this the solution I should use? The Release Notes mentioned above has this line:
The Linux 2.0 glibc version of Communicator is linked against glibc 2.0.7 and XFree86 3.3.1
Was I supposed to get the 2.0? I'm confused. I think I'm on the right track though... ================ Additionally, I would like to install jdk1.2pre-v2.tar.bz2 and jre1.2pre-v2.tar.bz2 from www.blackdown.org. (playin' with this stuff under win32 just ain't BITCHIN'!) It looks like I will need libc-2.1.2-31.i386.rpm, libcinfo-2.1.2-31.i386.rpm, and shlibs-2.1.2-31.i386.rpm from ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/6.3/full-names/i386/ (or the short-name equivalent..) Is this what I will need to upgrade? How do I go about upgrading them? It seems like booting from the CD and updating from there would be a good start, but what else should I know about?
