I'm hoping there's some fix for slow KDE's that applies here. Say, set an environment var to "Speed up old hardware" :-)
Of course you won't be able to do much about the slow CPU, but adding more memory can do wonders for performance of many X applications simply by eliminating a lot of swapping. KDE still won't perform as fast as lot of other X desktops. Put in another 16-32MB if you can--you should see quite a difference.
