I've got KDE installed as it comes "out of the SuSE box." It takes
forever to load, forever to start an app, etc.

Now, I must confess that it's on antique hardware...486DX @ 66Mhz,
VLBus graphics, and 16 Mb of memory. But, if that's the reason it
crawls, then I'm less than impressed, because my Win95 hums right along
on this box, as does fvwm95 (with lots of icons removed).

I'm hoping there's some fix for slow KDE's that applies here. Say, set
an environment var to "Speed up old hardware" :-)
