I've struggled with this myself. It seems to be something odd about the permissions that are set on the ppp daemon and various scripts when installed. Kppp must use it's own stuff, because the problem only exists when not using Kppp. The way that I got around this was to manually set the permissions on the pppd daemon and the scripts used. If you set all user and group settings to 'root' and then set the execute and r/w permissions to allow others to access these, then you'll probably get a lasting connection. I can't remember if you can tell kppp to look on a specific port rather than /dev/modem. If kppp is not looking at /dev/modem make sure /dev/modem points to the correct port - ttyS0 for Com1, ttyS1 for Com2.
If you start Minicom can you connect to the modem & get a response when you type "at" & return?
Look in /var/log/messages for the trail of woe leading up to pppd dying.
Still struggling with the command line dialup. Kppp works fine however.
wvdialconf tell me 'no modem detected'
wvdial dials up and connects then immediately dies with 'PPP deamon has died' and procedes to redial.
Any ideas anyone? (6.3 with Diamond external 56.6 modem)
Best wishes from Steve.
