Yes, StarOffice can read (and write) in excel format. Of course, it isn't perfect. It's on the SuSE 6.3 CD under pay/so_en.
I am not sure if it is included with SuSE or not, grep the ARCHIVES file on the first CD-ROM for it, if not it can be downloaded at:
