Fix on the Ping: I determined that it was the windos95 box that
was at fault. I decided to start over and deleted all the network
stuff and card. I then reinstalled the card and software. In the
control panel/network I assigned the IP and subnet mask numbers,
making the mask the same in both the TCP/IP -> 3Com Etherlink
III-etc and the TCP/IP -> Dial-Up adapter properties. It still
would not work. I then played around with the mask numbers.
Having the 3Com mask set to 255.255.255.0 and the Dial-Up set to
255.255.255.1 made it start working. The IP in both is the same
18.104.22.168. No gateway, DNS, or WINS entries were made. Also
the box to enable netBIOS over TCP/IP was checked.
I haven't been able to ping to the printer yet. It is a
Tektronics phaser 540Plus. But I will worry about that after I
get samba set up and working.
Thanks Jim for the input. Some of the things you said did lead me
in the right direction as to where to look for the problem.
