| I observed that as well on 6.2, for new users only. "cd ~USER" | fails, while if I do "cd USER-HOME" explicitly, it works.
It has something to do with NSCD (Name Service Cache Daemon); please, try nscd.conf(5) and nscd(8).

SuSE Linux 6.2 did not have these manpages yet. They have been added by the glibc maintainers after the release of 6.2.
