In some recent threads, people were talking about how to read Texinfo files, and there was some discontent with the idea of using Info to read them. I wanted to let folks around here know of another alternative: the latest version of tkman. You can retrieve it from: ftp://ftp.cs.berkeley.edu/ucb/people/phelps/tcltk/ It can display both Texinfo files and traditional man pages. The drawback is that you'll have to install it yourself, along with the latest (8.2) versions of tcl and tk. You'll need in addition the latest version of rman (available in the same directory as tkman) and glimpse (included in SuSE). What's more, you'll need to patch the tcl distribution using a patch included in the tkman distribution. The author, Tom Phelps, tells me that when tcl8.3 appears, you won't need to do any patching. The place to get the latest tarballs for tcl and tk is: http://www.scriptics.com I found the installation procedure for tkman to be laborious because I had to pick up so many different pieces of supporting software, and also modify makefiles to make the paths consistent with SuSE conventions. For building tcl and tk, I used the options --prefix=/usr/X11R6 -with-gcc You'll also have to do some database building with glimpseindex and build by hand or with a script the index file dir.tkman for looking at Texinfo files. In summary, it's a lot of work but probably worth it.
