I unfortunately misplaced a file I had kept the answer to this in so if someone could remind me I would appreciate it. Where and what entries do I need to add so that the 'home' and 'end' keys function properly in a term/console window?
Depends on the shell you're using. If it's bash then the file is ~/.inputrc. I have "\e[1~": beginning-of-line # Home "\e[4~": end-of-line # End in it to make the home/end keys work in an rxvt. The keysequences (\e[1~, \e[4~) may differ with other terminal emulators. Press Ctrl-V + Home/End at the bash prompt to find it out.
