First, how does the upgrade treat software that I don't want "upgraded" ; e.g., the 2.2.14 kernel and source tree, as well as programs that I've built from tarballs that are newer than what come with 6.3.
You get the chance to deselect things. It will search the machine [the rpm database I guess] to find version numbers. If those numbers are lower then what you've installed it will add them to the list of things to be updated. Just look at all the packages and decide if you really want it to upgrade. I guess the correct thing would be to somehow update the rpm database but I've never gotten up the ambition.
Second, with programs that aren't necessary to get the distro up and running-- X, compilers, & so forth, would I be better off to back up the config files and uninstall them, or will the upgrade (generally) deal with them correctly?
IMHO 6.3 created a ton of backup config files. OTOH always backup nontrivial backup files.
Finally, are there any programs that I should *definitely* uninstall before the upgrade?
I don't think so. Like I said you can always override what the install program wants to install. The install program still thinks I've got a DHCP client that came with 6.0.
